Aperion Audio's second-gen Zona Home Audio Link cuts the musical tether for $150

No need for the bookshelf speakers? No problem. Aperion Audio just introduced the second-generation Zona Home Audio Link system, enabling cable detesters to send music from any USB / 3.5mm-enabled source to, well... just about anything. The basic HAL package is comprised of a compact wireless transmitter and receiver, and since there's no proprietary shenanigans going on, it's about as universal in nature as you'll find. Needless to say, folks who've been trying to find an easy(ish) way to convert their existing indoor / outdoor speakers into wireless speakers should certainly have a gander, and given that it'll stream uncompressed 16 bit/48 kHz CD-quality audio to up to three simultaneous zones, the $149 price tag just might be justified. Hit the source to learn more (or place your order, if you've heard enough).

Yamaha shows off 7.1-capable YAS-101 sound bar

Yamaha's audio division has announced its latest product: the YAS-101 Front Surround System, a sound bar which - it claims - offers impressive psuedo-surround-sound capabilities in a remarkably compact package.
Designed - as with previous sound bars - to replace a surround-sound setup in a space-limited environment, the YAS-101 sits in front of the TV and provides a dual-driver speaker design with a built-in 60W subwoofer.
It's Yamaha's Air Surround Xtreme technology where things get interesting, however: the company claims that, with some clever internal processing, the YAS-101 can replicate a full 7.1-channel surround-sound setup, despite having no side or rear speakers, with full Dolby Digital and DTS decoding supported.
"Yamaha introduced the sound bar category in 2005," explained the company's president Tom Sumner. "With each model we've introduced, we have offered consumers the benefit of our unique understanding of sound and audio, including extensive input from our pro audio and musical instrument product companies. With the YAS-101, we are able to give customers an incredible audio experience, as well as simple set up and installation at an unprecedented price. This is the ideal entry point for anyone interested in stepping up to a serious sound bar solution."
The sound bar includes its own remote control, or can learn commands from a TV's remote - and includes a system for passing infra-red commands 'through' the device, meaning it should never block the control of the TV itself.
The YAS-101 is available now, priced at around £220.

Yamaha YAS-101 Sound Bar Speaker

http://www.ecoustics.com/electronics/messages/10381/692508.jpg
Yamaha announced the entry-level, YAS-101 Front Surround Speaker System featuring the latest Air Surround Xtreme technologies and a built-in powerful subwoofer that delivers a 7.1 channel surround sound from a single unit all in a stylish, beautiful piano black finish.

The YAS-101 soundbar combines two 2-1/2" cone speakers with a dual-driver (3" cones) subwoofer, driven by a digital amp with a total output of 120 Watts. Although compact, its excellent structural design provides a large volume enclosure for both the speakers and subwoofer. The result is powerful, high quality sound that makes TV and movies much more enjoyable.

The YAS-101 features Yamaha's exclusive Air Surround Xtreme technology that delivers 7.1 channels of highly accurate surround sound, with precise positioning to more distinctly deliver dialog, sound effects and music soundtracks that immerse the listener in movies, sporting events, concerts or any other programming. The model also supports Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound formats. Yamaha's UniVolume function eliminates the annoying and unsettling spike in volume during commercials when watching TV programming.

The YAS-101 can be operated by the supplied remote control, and can also be powered on and have its volume adjusted via the user's TV, cable or satellite remotes. This is made possible by the sound bar's ability to learn the control codes of these other components of a home entertainment system.

Offering great installation flexibility, the 4-1/4" tall YAS-101 can be placed in front of the TV without blocking the picture. The unit's feet are placed wide enough apart to fit over the monitor's pedestal. Since the sound bar will often be placed in front of the TV, Yamaha engineers built-in a unique and patent-pending solution that allows the YAS-101 to pass IR remote codes through to the TV, solving a problem that plagues other sound bars. It can also be placed on a separate shelf or easily wall mounted.

The YAS-101 easily connects to any HDTV with a single digital cable (included). This sound bar also provides two optical inputs, 1 coaxial input, as well as a subwoofer output (line out) for an optional external subwoofer.

MSRP: $299.95

Wharfedale DX-1 HCP Home Theater Speaker System

http://www.ecoustics.com/electronics/messages/10381/692618.jpg
Wharfedale announced the DX-1 HCP (Home Cinema Package) consisting of four satellite speakers for the front and rear, plus a similarly diminutive center speaker and a compact active subwoofer. The speakers take their design cues from their Diamond 10.1 standmount speakers, with their curved cabinets and silver-finished cone surrounds, albeit shrunk to a much smaller size -- the satellite speakers are just 19cm high.

Each DX-1 Satellite sports a 19mm silk dome tweeter and 75mm mid/bass driver with woven polypropylene cone. The enclosure is an infinite baffle (closed-box) design and the speakers can be sited in close proximity to a wall without affecting their performance.

The DX-1 Centre combines two 75mm mid/bass drivers either side of a 19mm tweeter. In addition, it incorporates an aperiodic loading system to aid bass response, consisting of a vent that is filled with resistive porous form to control airflow, thus contributing to a rich and detailed centre channel performance -- a critical part of the surround sound experience.

The DX-1 Subwoofer combines a 200mm long-throw bass cone with a new-generation, 150W Class D amplifier, to deliver bass that's fast, deep and well-defined from an extremely compact unit -- just 33.5x28.5x32cm (HxWxD). The quality of the subwoofer's design ensures it integrates superbly with the other speakers in the package, without any hint of bass bloating or overhang.

Available in high-gloss black or high-gloss white, the DX-1 HCP delivers smart, space-saving contemporary style and exhilarating sound for both movies and music -- fast, punchy and detailed, with a sense of scale that belies the diminutive size of the speakers.

Price and Availability
The Wharfedale DX-1 HCP is available from September 2011 for £399.95.

Sony XDP-PK1000 / XDP-MU110 Digital Link Car Audio Sound System

Sony announced two Digital Link Sound Systems that add-on iPhone/iPod integration and enhance the audio quality of factory head units. The XDP-PK1000 is an all-in-one five piece package which includes amplifier and subwoofer. The XDP-MU110 model is a condensed three-piece system without the sub and amp.

XDP-PK1000 Digital Link Sound System
The XDP-PK1000 Digital Link Sound System is a total car audio system comprised of five pieces: Cradle for iPhone, card remote, Digital Sound Processor Master Unit, 12 inch box subwoofer, and Class D Mono Block Amplifier. The internal DSP processing creates a balanced front stage and improves sound quality on a pre-installed original car audio system. It enhances iPod Touch or iPhone playback by digitally connecting and fully processing in the digital domain for optimized sound performance. It also enables adjustment of time alignment, equalization and crossover points to deliver an improved audio experience. The processor is customizable, utilizing three multi-position switches to adjust DSP parameters for 18 types of vehicles.

Bass response is increased with the 300 watt Class D amp and sealed 12 inch subwoofer enclosure. The Class D amp is highly efficient, converting about 90% of incoming power into output to the speakers. Sony's original technology, Dynamic Distortion Suppressor, suppresses distortion that occurs at higher playback levels for clear bass reproduction. The subwoofer utilizes Sony's Dimpled Woofer Cone, which makes the unit lightweight but tough, while producing higher output power.

Using the adjustable dash mounted cradle, you can control playback of internally stored audio content or listen to audio from internet audio apps on an iPod touch or iPhone. The included wireless remote lets drivers control the basic functions of the system.

XDP-MU110 Digital Link Sound System
For music lovers who already have an amplifier and subwoofer or want to install a different audio system, the XDP-MU110 system is an ideal solution. This model comes with three pieces: Cradle for iPhone, Digital Sound Processor Master Unit and card remote. Buyers of this model still get the enhanced sound quality from the DSP processing and increased functionality from the mounted cradle and wireless remote control while having the flexibility and freedom to combine with the amplifier and subwoofer of their choice. The XDP-MU110 model offers a simple and easy set-up and navigation support by illumination color (cradle) and beep sound. Whether using the internal 45W x 4 high power amplifier for speakers or the 2 Volt Front, Rear and Sub RCA pre-amp outputs to feed an external amplifier, drivers can dial in the output for optimum sound.

Pricing and Availability
  • The Sony XDP-PK1000 Digital Link Sound System will be available in September 2011 for about $700.
  • The Sony XDP-MU110 Digital Link Sound System will be available November 2011 for about $400.
