icam case turns your iPhone into a fake digital camera

How often have you looked at your iPhone 4 and thought “wouldn’t this be better if it looked like an ugly camera?” Oh good, I’m not the only one. Don’t worry, I know this is an issue that’s been plaguing you since you accidentally spent a couple hundred bucks on that shiny glass-covered monstrosity. The good people over at Brando have a solution called the icam, and it’s cheap.
For just $16 you can fool everyone into thinking your iPhone is actually just a colorful digital camera. You’ll get your choice of pink, green, white and black cases, each with their own neck strap. The lens will even extend, so you can complete the ruse by pretending to zoom in on a picture, when you’re really just texting your friends. This is one opportunity that you can’t pass up.

Samsung Invents 16MP Camera Sensor for Smartphones, Tablets, Cameras.

Samsung Electronics has introduced a new ultra-high 16MP resolution CMOS image sensor that features Samsung's new backside illumination pixel technology is aimed not only at digital still cameras, but also at advanced mobile applications, such as tablets or even smartphones. Provided that Samsung or other vendors equip the S5K2P1 sensor with proper lenses, it will offer unprecedented picture quality on ultra-portable devices.
The Samsung's S5K2P1 is a 1/2.3" image sensor that supports maximum 16MP resolution and sports advanced 1.34 micrometer (um) backside illumination (BSI) pixel technology. Using Samsung’s advanced 1.34um BSI pixel technology, the S5K2P1 delivers excellent sensitivity and low-noise performances, the company indicated. The S5K2P1 also promises to provide brighter and more vivid pictures even at night and dark indoor conditions.
The image sensor is optimized for compact mobile CE devices, with high image quality in video mode. Supporting multiple interfaces, this image sensor is also suited for premium smartphones. The S5K2P1 sensor supports a native 16:9 format video at up to 8.3MP resolution at 60 frames per second and maximum 16MP resolution for point-and-shoot images at 30 frames per second without shutter lag effect.
Surprisingly, but Samsung primarily targets high-performance, advanced smartphones as well as digital still cameras and camcorders with its new offering.
“As the adoption rate of CMOS image sensors in the digital still camera market increases, market demand for imagers such as the S5K2P1, which provides clear and fast video, is expected to grow in 2012. Introducing advanced high-resolution imagers based on BSI pixel technology supports further adoption of Samsung CMOS imagers to compact digital camera and camcorder applications,” said Dojun Rhee, vice president of system LSI marketing  at Samsung Electronics.
According to market research firm TSR (Techno System Research), the digital still camera market is expected to reach 154 million units in 2012 where a substantial portion of up to 48.2% is forecast to be adoption of CMOS image sensors as the main sensor device.
Samsung’s S5K2P1 image sensor is currently sampling to select customers. Mass production for this imager is scheduled for November 2011.

$99 HP TouchPad to go on Sale Today on HP Store? [Update]

Yesterday HP employees got a chance to buy the $99 TouchPad. If there are any left, than HP might already put them on sale today on the HP Store.

$99 HP TouchPad to go on Sale Today on HP Store?

HP gave their 300,000 employees a chance to buy the 16GB TouchPad for $99 in the employee purchase program. As reported, the demand was so high that the servers of the HP Store broke down. HP hosts the employee store on the same servers as the public HP consumer store. HP has remained silent on when consumers can expect to get a chance to buy the $99 TouchPad on the HP Store. Now that HP employees got the first dip, HP should know how many units are left for consumers. We expect HP as early as today to offer the remaining stock on the HP Store.
During the night HP TouchPad deal hunters spotted the 16GB HP TouchPad for $94.05 on a store called NWIT. Immediately the store got pushed to its limits and pages loaded slow if at all. NWIT lists the FB454UT for $94.05 for some reason. Buyers tweeted that their orders got through eventually and that they got a confirmation email. If and why that store has TouchPad inventory is unclear. Is it a sign that other retailers will get also fresh TouchPad inventory. As reported the other day, OnSale got new TouchPads to fulfill earlier canceled orders.
Get the latest HP TouchPad news from us and from around the web on our HP TouchPad Hub page.
Update:
Looks like HP employees can also order a TouchPad today. TechCrunch published another internal HP email. HP extended the purchase window because of the server issues yesterday. So at this point I do not expect HP to start offering $99 TouchPads to the public today.

Amazon Launched Kindle Touch and Cheapest Kindle Version Ever

Yesterday we said that Amazon was on fire in reference to their latest tablet, the Kindle Fire. What we failed to mention is that Amazon is really on fire having launched not just a new tablet, but also two versions of the new Kindle Touch as well as the cheapest Kindle ever, all at the same day.
The two Kindle Touch models are virtually the same except featuring a touchscreen 6-inch EInk display that supports multi-touch. They also both support text-to-speech, audio books, and music (mp3s), have built-in Wi-Fi, offer free cloud backup, and makes use of the Whispersync technology. Their only notable difference is that one version has a built-in free 3G wireless as well, making it the slightest bit heavier at 7.8oz (compared to 7.5oz). Of course, they also differ in price with the non-3G version available for pre-order in the US at $99 (£63) and the Kindle Touch 3G version priced at $149 (£96). Both versions will be start shipping out on November 21.
Amazon also released the cheapest, and  lightest (less than 6oz), Kindle model to date. While its display is not a touchscreen, its $79 (£50) price tag makes it really attractive. The problem though is that this e-book reader version will not see the light of UK since what made the pricing possible are the adverts that come with it. Since this is not allowed here in the UK, then we can expect this version not to hit our shores, or if it does, it will definitely be minus the ads and plus a big increase on the price tag.

Nikon Coolpix P300 Advanced Compact Camera, $233

Nikon's Coolpix P300 is a compact camera with manual controls, an advanced point-and-shoot aimed toward casual photographers. When we reviewed the Coolpix P300 earlier this year, we thought it was a great deal for the price (then $330). Now it's an even better deal: B&H is selling the Nikon Coolpix P300 for only $233, for a limited time. (The expiration date wasn't provided, though the deal is still good as of this writing.)

Kodak defends digital camera business

Chris Cheesman
Perez/Kodak

Kodak has defended its digital camera business following press reports that claimed it is struggling to compete against its rivals.

On Monday, shares in Eastman Kodak fell more than 25% after the iconic photography brand announced it was borrowing $160m for 'general corporate purposes'.

Subsequent media reports raised concerns about Kodak's strength in the digital photography arena.

Among the critics was Chris Green, a technology analyst at the Davies Murphy Group, who claimed the US-based firm was in danger of becoming obsolete in the digital age.

'Unless they can keep pace they won't survive,' he told the BBC.

Asked to respond to claims that Kodak is struggling to compete in the digital camera market, spokesman Christopher Veronda told Amateur Photographer: 'We have one of the leading digital camera line-ups, including top-selling pocket video cameras with differentiated features, and a wide range of digital cameras that feature the unique “Share” button.'

Windows Phone Web Marketplace offers browser-based app purchases

Microsoft has opened the virtual doors to its new look Windows Phone Marketplace, throwing up a new design and the ability to browse and grab your apps directly from your web browser. This means users will no longer have to install the Zune software in order to download apps from their desktop, there's no longer a mobile Marketplace-only restriction and it means Microsft has finally caught up with the likes of Apple and Android's app offerings.
Just log in using your Windows Live account and click on your app of choice to bring up a selection of screenshots and reviews, as well as the ability to make the purchase using your credit card. An app link is then sent to your phone for downloading, eradicating the need to connect your phone to a Mac or PC.
This is no doubt great news for Mac users then, who have until now been unable to purchase apps on their computers as Microsoft has insisted on using the Zune software via a PC.
It's live now, so if you feel like having a big screen browse on Windows Phone Marketplace, you can.

Apple to kill iPod classic and iPod shuffle

No September event, no more generations?

Apple to kill iPod classic and iPod shuffle. Audio, MP3 players, iPod, iPod shuffle, iPod classic, Apple 1

The iPod classic is dead, as is the iPod shuffle. That's the message coming from TUAW, who claims a source (not an analyst) as stating that both models are "getting the axe this year".
For the first time since 2005, Apple didn't hold a September event to announce super doopa new iPod models. In that year, the fifth generation classic was announced in October.
It's 10 years next month since Apple first unveiled the humble iPod, the model that evolved into the classic line.
The last major refresh for that range was in 2007 with the addition of the "classic" suffix when the iPod touch was first announced. Since then it has had only minor tweaks and had its storage capacity altered between 80GB, 120GB and 160GB.
The iPod shuffle, first announced in January 2005 and now on its fourth generation, obviously struggles in a mini MP3 player market in which its own brethren - the iPod nano - now dominates. For £131 you can have an Apple touch screen interface on a tiny scale, and that could essentially be the shuffle's downfall.
The invite to the 4 October Apple event makes no mention of the iPod at all, merely the message "let's talk iPhone".
And whilst there's rumours suggesting that the iPod touch could get an update, with a 3G version touted, there's been no talk regarding the poor old classic or the shuffle.
Could this be the end? Probably. Apple did mention in its latest annual earnings call that there would be a "product transition" within the company. And, despite shifting over 220 million iPods, the number of sales has been falling each year since 2008.
Still room for the classic and the shuffle? Let us know what you think using the comments below.

Isis NFC tech gets the nod from HTC, LG, Motorola, RIM, Samsung, and more

The world of NFC for payments using a mobile phone is growing rapidly with Google Wallet going official and already in use in some stores. Another competing offering that is in the NFC fight against Google is Isis. Isis is a NFC joint venture between some of the largest companies in the mobile sector including AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile USA, and Verizon Wireless. Isis previously vowed to rival Google Wallet and to support Android devices as well.

Isis has now announced that just about all of the major smartphone vendors on the market are putting the weight behind Isis technology. HTC, LG, Motorola Mobility, RIM, Samsung Mobile and Sony Ericsson have all announced that they will be introducing devices that have Isis NFC technology standards inside. Isis is also going to work with DeviceFidelity to add NFC tech to devices that lack it internally.
Isis NFC will allow consumers to make payments, store loyalty cards for retailers they frequent and use those loyalty cards inside the store without having to keep up with a physical card. I think the key to what tech is able to make it in the market between Google Wallet and Isis will be retailer support and the support of device makers.

Samsung Galaxy Player Mini-Tablet Headed for the U.S. in Two Sizes

Samsung has just announced that it's going to release two versions of the Galaxy Player in the U.S. next month. This device won't be a smartphone, instead it is going to be an Android-based handheld computer focused on games, video, and music.
Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 vs. Galaxy Player 4.0The two versions will differ in only a couple of ways, most notably display size: one will have a 5-inch WVGA (800 x 480) Touchscreen and the other with a 4-inch one of the same resolution. This will give them bigger screens than their top rival, the Apple iPod touch. And like Apple's handheld, the Galaxy Player is intended to appeal to consumers who want most of the features of a smartphone but without the monthly wireless service fee.
No matter its size, this model is powered by Android OS 2.3.5 (Gingerbread), with a new user interface. It will come with the standard suite of Google apps and the Android Market. There will be 8GB of built-in memory and a microSD memory card slot for additional storage.
As there will be no no cellular connectivity, Wi-Fi b/g/n will enable this mini-tablet to access the Web, email, and other online content. Bluetooth will also be included.
In addition, the Galaxy Player is going to include front and rear cameras for video chat and photography.
Samsung Galaxy Player Hands-On PreviewThe version with a 5-inch display will be 3.1 x 5.6 x 0.5 inches, weigh 6.4 ounces, and include a 2500 mAh battery. The more diminutive version is going to be 2.5 x 4.9 x 0.4 inches, 4.3 ounces, and include a 1200 mAh battery.
Price and AvailabilityThe Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 and 4.0 will be available for sale nationwide starting on October 16. The 5-inch version is going to sell for $270, while the 4-inch one will cost $230.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 Wi-Fi arrives at the FCC

In warehouses all over the world, there are caches of the new range of Samsung Galaxy Tab devices waiting to be unleashed to the masses the moment the injunction which Apple filed against Samsung’s tablets are lifted by the courts. Good thing there is no such problem here in the US, and yet another Galaxy Tab model has arrived at the FCC – which signals an imminent release to the mass market. We’re talking about the Galaxy Tab 7.7 here, which is also known as the GT-P6810.
This particular model will most probably be a Wi-Fi only version that carries with it 16GB of internal memory, and there was nothing about wireless bands on the GT-P6810. No idea on exactly when the Galaxy Tab 7.7 will arrive Stateside, but it is most likely that “soon” is the correct answer.
In the mean time, which Galaxy Tab tablet are you eyeing at, or are you still waiting to get your hands on the uber popular iPad 2?

Telstra 4G: why more speed matters

Take Control of Your Super Special Offer Ends Soon. Apply Now!
Telstra 4G modem. Telstra 4G modem.
Australia's first 4G LTE network is open to the public, but what will we do with it?
Long Term Evolution, or LTE, is the next step in Australia’s mobile broadband revolution. It’s referred to as 4G even though it doesn’t technically meet the definition of 4G (we’ll need to wait for LTE Advanced). Yet marketing departments never let the facts get in the way of a good story, so Australia’s telcos are using the term 4G to describe LTE.
After a limited trial with business customers, today Telstra threw open the doors to its new 4G LTE network. Coverage was initially restricted to inner Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, but has expanded to cover more than 30 regional and metropolitan centres (you can check coverage here). This should extend to 80 locations by the end of the year.
LTE promises download speeds of 100 megabits per second, although we all know that theoretical network speeds should be taken with a grain of salt. Telstra is promising "typical download speeds ranging from 2Mbps to 40Mbps", which sounds more realistic.
To tap into these impressive speeds you’ll need a new phone or USB dongle. Telstra’s first LTE devices are dual-mode 4G/3G USB dongles which fall back to the HSDPA network where LTE coverage isn’t available. Pricing is the same as existing HSDPA dongles and data, which would indicate that Telstra is keen to get customers on the LTE network as soon as possible in order to share the load with its 850 MHz HSDPA network (just like Vodafone is desperately trying to move customers to its new 850 MHz network to spread the load). What’s really interesting is that you’ll be throttled if you reach your monthly limit, a shift away from Telstra’s horrendous excess mobile data charges.
Current Australian handsets aren’t LTE-compatible, but a handful of LTE-compatible phones are available overseas such as the HTC Thunderbolt, LG Revolution and Samsung Droid Charge. Telstra has promised to offer an LTE-capable HTC Android smartphone some time in the first half of next year, along with an LTE-capable tablet.
So what are we going to do with this new-found speed? You might think it’s targeted at business users, but Telstra is pushing the "fun" consumer angle hard - promising faster TV, movie and music downloads. It’s also pushing the social networking angle, letting you upload incriminating photos to Facebook faster than ever.
Telstra isn’t the only Australian telco forging ahead with LTE. Optus and Vodafone Hutchison Australia have also undertaken LTE trials and should launch public services some time next year (Vodafone was even talking about the end of this year at one point).
Telstra has deep pockets and first-mover advantage, so it might be hoping to drive the competition to the wall in an expensive LTE arms race. If I was a Vodafone or Optus customer, I’d be demanding they put more effort into improving coverage blackspots, but I guess they can’t afford to be left behind.
Do you feel the need for speed, or would you prefer improved coverage from your telco? What would you do with the speed boost offered by LTE?

Apple blocks vacation dates for employees

http://cdn2.ubergizmo.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/apple-no-vacation.jpgThere comes a time in life when you need to bleed for your company, and if you’re an Apple employee, next month is one of those times. It seems that rom October 9th through the 12th, and on October 14th and 15th, you won’ t be able to take a vacation – and normally this happens only when something large is looming on the horizon, which we’re thinking jives to the tune of the iPhone 5. After all, Apple will probably need just about anyone and everyone available to handle the purported swarm of eager beaver customers who want to be early adopters.
Since there are two blocks of blackout dates, they certainly won’t signify the launch of the iPhone 5 twice – which means one of them will have something to do with the unreleased iOS 5, which will be in time for the iPhone 5 if our historical recollection of what Apple did previously is correct. Boo hoo to those born on those days and are working at Apple – you might not be able to celebrate as intended.

Coffee Table Aquarium

http://www.redferret.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/51Nzu6WFr4L._SS500_.jpg
The giant tank that has been holding your own personal ocean of fish is getting kind of old, and you were hoping to get something new. It’s always hard to find that perfect tank, and especially to find one that is going to give your fishies enough space to swim around without taking up an entire counter. If you want something newer and stylish, why not go for one that can also double as a coffee table?
The Coffee Table Aquarium can be a centerpiece for your living room instead of being a huge, menacing fish tank that barely fits on whatever it’s on top of. This coffee table will literally bring you and your little aquatic pets closer together, and comes with all the decorative plants, lighting, and filtration pumps you would ever need. It is rather pricey at about $660, but if you totaled the price for both a nice coffee table and a huge fish tank, you’d know that this is a steal.

The Canon 200mm ƒ/2.8L II USM was introduced by Canon in 1996 as an update to the version I lens. A workhorse in Canon's telephoto lineup, the 200mm lens is unique in Canon's lineup as being the only offering in that prime focal length at ƒ/2.8 that doesn't offer an image stabilized option; if you need image stabilization at 200mm, you'll have to pay significantly more for the 70-200mm ƒ/2.8, or a lot more for the 200mm ƒ/2.
The 200mm ƒ/2.8 was designed for film, so it's at home on both EF and EF-S mounts. On APS-C sensor bodies the lens provides an equivalent field of view of 320mm; on APS-H bodies the equivalent field of view is 260mm. The lens ships with the ET-83BII hood, but does not ship with the tripod mount: this optional accessory costs just shy of $150. The lens itself takes 72mm filters, and is available for around $800.
Sharpness
The 200mm ƒ/2.8 offers exceptional performance for sharpness at ƒ/2.8, on both APS-C and full-frame test bodies (7D and 1Ds Mark III respectively). While it's not tack-sharp wide open, results are still very good indeed; there's slight improvement at ƒ/4, but by ƒ/5.6 it's sharp all over and stays that way through to ƒ/11 where diffraction limiting has begun to set in. By ƒ/16 results are still very good, and good at ƒ/22; fully stopped-down at ƒ/32, the lens produces images which are somewhat soft across the frame.
Chromatic Aberration
The lens produces very low chromatic aberration in our testing, showing only in the corners in areas of high contrast (to our eyes, very light magenta fringing).
Shading (''Vignetting'')
On APS-C based sensor bodies such as the Canon 7D, corner shading is not an issue. On full-frame bodies such as the 1Ds Mark III, very light corner shading is apparent when the aperture is set wide open to ƒ/2.8; in this case, the extreme corners are 1/3 stop darker than the center of the frame.
Distortion
Distortion is almost non-existent on cropped-frame sensor bodies; on full-frame bodies it's a little more significant, showing some very slight (+0.3%) barrel distortion in the corners.
Autofocus Operation
With its USM focusing system, the 200mm focuses almost instantly, and makes almost no noise in doing so. Autofocus results can be overridden by just turning the focus ring at any time. The lens is equipped with a focus limiter switch, enabling the focus performance to be improved by limiting the range of distance being focused upon. Focus limiting options are 1.5m to infinity or 3.5m to infinity.
Macro
With a magnification ratio of 0.16x and a close-focusing distance of around 5 feet (1.5 meters), this is not a lens you want to turn to for macro work. This magnification can be extended to .23x and .32x with 12mm and 25mm Extension Tubes respectively, and the Canon 500D Close-up lens offers further magnification.
Build Quality and Handling
The 200mm ƒ/2.8L is built with great attention to detail, however, does not feature the dust- and weather-resistant gaskets of newer Canon L-class lenses. It also lacks the telltale white finish of Canon's more expensive glass, opting instead for black. The body mount is metal, while the 72mm filter threads are plastic. The lens offers a recessed and windowed distance scale marked in feet and meters. A depth-of-field reference is provided, but only for ƒ/32, and there is an infrared index mark. There are two command switches: a 2-stage focus limiter switch (1.5m-infinity or 3.5m-infinity), and a Autofocus/Manual Focus selector. The lens is compatible with both the Canon Extender 1.4x and the Canon Extender 2x.
The focusing ring is 1 1/4'' wide, composed of rubber with large ribs. It turns around 120 degrees and is limited on both ends with soft stops: an increase in resistance lets you know you've reached a focus limit. Manual focusing is a very pleasant experience, very smooth, allowing you to easily find your mark.
As one would expect from a lens of this caliber, the front element does not turn during focus operations. The ET-83BII hood is round, attaching with a bayonet mount, which reverses onto the lens for easy storage. The hood's interior is composed of a velvet-style flocking, and when extended the hood will add 2 1/2 inches to the lens' overall length.
Alternatives
The only direct alternative in the 200mm telephoto range for Canon is the $5,500 200mm ƒ/2L IS, so we've included some zoom lenses which reach out to 200mm.
Canon EF 200mm ƒ/2L IS USM ~$5,500
You'll pay a lot for an extra stop of light gathering ability - but in the process you'll also get a list of extra features, and image stabilization to boot. The 200mm ƒ/2 is a legendary lens, and excelled at every test we could throw at it.
Canon EF 70-200mm ƒ/2.8L IS II USM ~$2,400
A staple for almost every pro Canon shooter, the 70-200mm is an extremely versatile lens, but doesn't quite match the optical quality of the dedicated 200mm ƒ/2.8 prime. At 200mm, the prime lens is notably sharper - you'll have to stop the zoom lens down to ƒ/8 to match it - and distortion is much more prominent. While it does come with image stabilization, the price tag is significantly higher.
Sigma 70-200mm ƒ/2.8 EX DG HSM APO ~$800
Sigma's latest version of this lens comes with OS (optical stabilization) technology, but previous versions did not, making it a reasonable comparison (in specs, as well as price). At 200mm, the Sigma is still quite good, though the Canon is significantly sharper at ƒ/2.8. Distortion and corner shading a more pronounced, though chromatic aberration is well controlled, on the Sigma.
Tamron 70-200mm ƒ/2.8 Di LD IF Macro SP AF ~$780
Tamron also produces a non-stabilized 70-200mm zoom lens, at the same price point as the Canon 200mm ƒ/2.8 prime lens. We were impressed with the sharpness of the Tamron, more at the 70-100mm end, but the 200mm end is very good - almost as good as the Canon. Distortion is unsurprisingly a bit worse on the zoom than on the prime.
Conclusion
For its test results alone, the performance and modest price tag of the Canon 200mm ƒ/2.8L II USM make it an excellent addition to any Canon shooter's collection. However, if you want or need image stabilization, it's available only in longer or faster telephoto primes, or the 70-200mm zoom lens, any of which cost significantly more than the 200mm f/2.8L.

Sample Photos
The VFA target should give you a good idea of sharpness in the center and corners, as well as some idea of the extent of barrel or pincushion distortion and chromatic aberration, while the Still Life subject may help in judging contrast and color. We shoot both images using the default JPEG settings and manual white balance of our test bodies, so the images should be quite consistent from lens to lens.
As appropriate, we shoot these with both full-frame and sub-frame bodies, at a range of focal lengths, and at both maximum aperture and ƒ/8. For the ''VFA'' target (the viewfinder accuracy target from Imaging Resource), we also provide sample crops from the center and upper-left corner of each shot, so you can quickly get a sense of relative sharpness, without having to download and inspect the full-res images. To avoid space limitations with the layout of our review pages, indexes to the test shots launch in separate windows.
