iPhone Thieves Reveal Their Methods

http://cbssanfran.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/iphone_4_102369342.jpg?w=300More Bay Area thieves are targeting smartphones, with some bold enough to snatch the gadgets out of people’s hands. Two of those thieves even told CBS 5 how they pick their targets.
Dozens of smartphone robberies are reported every week in the Bay Area. It can happen during the day, even in crowded public places, as Ashley Sedillo can testify.
She was sitting at a bus stop in downtown San Francisco, texting her mom on her iPhone. Sedillo recalled suddenly, “I felt someone from behind me put their hand over my hands. I kind of thought it was someone kind of playing a prank on me. And then I realized with how forceful they were, when they whipped me around, that it was not a joke.”
Instinctively Sedillo tried to hold on to her phone. That’s when one of the suspects attacked her. “He closed fist punched me twice,” she said. The attack left her badly bruised and shaken.
Cellphone robberies, especially for Apple iPhones, are on the rise all over the Bay Area. CBS 5 compiled data from police reports and found close to 400 incidents in the past 6 months in San Francisco alone.
Many of the holdups involved violence. People punched, pistol whipped, held up with an ice scraper, even a gun. And that’s just “reported” robberies; many victims don’t even come forward.
Two admitted thieves wore masks to tell CBS 5 WHY. “People are afraid,” they said. The thieves said they pick targets who won’t call the police. “If you find someone that looks like they could either afford a new one or were smart enough to get the insurance plan, it’s not worth the trouble to them.”
The thieves it takes just minutes to wipe a stolen phone clean. “You just pull out the cord in your phone, plug it into your computer, download jailbreaking software. It just wipes everything clean, passwords and everything.”
Then the thieves can sell it. “You can get $300 to $400 for it, just hand to hand transaction,” they said.
So where are they selling the phones? A CBS 5 investigation reveals that in San Francisco stolen electronics almost always end up at the corner of 7th and Market Streets. That’s where cellphone thieves from all over the city come to sell their stolen wares. “It’s like an iphone Walmart over there,” the two admitted thieves said.
CBS 5 went undercover to find out. When approached, some buyers seemed very open about it, admitting they buy stolen phones. They’ll pay $50 to $75 for older models, and hundreds of dollars for newer models. Most of the stolen phones that are fenced at 7th and Market end up in Mexico and China.
So how could such a brazen fencing operation be allowed to continue, right out in public? CBS 5 took the question to Joe Garrity, Captain of the Tenderloin police station, blocks away from 7th and Market.
“I think we have not dropped the ball on electronic devices,” Garrity told CBS 5. He said SFPD conducts regular undercover stings, but building cases takes time.
We got a taste of what the police are up against on a ride with Sgt. Mark Obrochta. Approaching 7th and Market streets, he explained why it’s such a difficult corner to police. There is plenty of traffic and pedestrians, and a very organized gang of criminals who do their own surveillance on the cops.
As we went by the corner we saw an attempted transaction: A woman giving a phone to a man in a green shirt. “The female may be selling it,” Obrochta said.
But the man in the green shirt apparently wasn’t interested. “Maybe she was asking too much,” Obrochta said.
According to Oborchta, that is a typical pattern. But catching the suspects in the act is another story. Sure enough, within minutes we were spotted, and the suspects all cleared out.
Obrochta is keeping up the fight, but said in the meantime cellphone owners have to do their share: “Don’t use them unless you have to,” he said.
Victims like Ashley Sedillo couldn’t agree more. “Keep them put away. You don’t want people to know you have it.”
Sedillo had a “find my phone” app but it didn’t help. If the phone is turned off by thieves, those apps may not work.

iPhone jailbreak: Siri hack could cancel your upgrade

New iPhone jailbreak workarounds are released as often as iOS updates, but Friday’s news that an untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 4S had been achieved is unquestionably the most devastating blow to Scott Forstall’s mobile division since the humiliating jailbreakme.com arrived on the scene for iOS 4 devices last August.
In fact, in light of a coder getting Siri on an iPhone 4 connecting to Apple’s servers, it could be even worse. For the first time, your average user may have a real, compelling reason to jailbreak their iPhone 4 – and not buy another for years.
Over the weekend, Apple suffered two major setbacks. On Friday, the first video evidence of an untethered iPhone jailbreak for iOS 5 emerged. Jailbreaking allows you to run apps that have not been approved by Apple, and untethered jailbreaks are more suitable for public release, as they don’t require your iPhone to be plugged into a computer on restart every time.
That was shortly followed by another major breakthrough: a developer had not only managed to get the iPhone 4S exclusive Siri voice assistant running on an older iPhone 4 and iPod touch, they had got it to connect to Apple’s servers (the whole point of Siri, and the previous stumbling block for hackers) and return voice queries as normal. As you can see in the video below, it works flawlessly:
Until now, it’s been generally assumed that the reason Siri wasn’t rolled out to older devices such as the iPhone 4 was the need for the dual-core A5 processor. As this video demonstrates, with jailbroken devices that’s far from the case. “The Siri software needs to cache data, needs to access a big dataset at wide bandwidth and needs a big processor to crunch all of the numbers,” Norman Winarsky, an academic who helped assemble the Siri team told 9to5Mac this month.
Clearly, the iPhone 4′s A4 processor is big enough. It’s all about the upsell though, and Apple needs to provide enough reasons for customers to upgrade (some would argue understandably, given it’s the world’s second largest business and owes its shareholders a responsibility): in the case of the iPhone 4S, Siri is unquestionably it.
That’s why however, a new iPhone jailbreak could be devastating for Apple. With each successive release of iOS, Apple’s removed a reason to jailbreak, be it multi-tasking, Wi-Fi hotspot sharing or unobtrusive notifications – but Siri could have people queuing up outside the virtual doors of Cydia once again.
The company is gearing up for its biggest quarter ever: pundits are predicting it could make as much as $40bn (£25bn) between now and January. A large part of that potential market will be current iPhone owners upgrading and hoping for a shiny new iPhone 4S under the tree – indeed, market analyst Horace Dediu estimates that there are as many as 70million iPhone 4 owners out there. If a simple way to jailbreak your iPhone hits before then, combined with an easy to use Siri hack, that could take every single iPhone 4 owner off the market.
An iPhone jailbreak would cease to be a niche need for power users, and instead bring a headline feature of the iPhone 4S back a generation (and it’s by no means clear that Siri won’t run on an iPhone 3GS either). At at least £500 per iPhone 4S, that could translate to a £35 billion pound problem for Apple.
Now to be clear, jailbreaking devices is far from a bad thing. Microsoft has worked closely withe Windows Phone jail breakers to provide software for hobbyists to run homebrew apps. In the case of the iPhone, a US court even ruled it legal. End user license agreements (EULAs) stating otherwise are about as valid as an IOU from the Greek government. Why shouldn’t you be allowed to install what you like on what you paid for?
Though a public iPhone jailbreak for iOS 5 is surely inevitable, it’s also by no means clear that this Siri hack will be made public: the hacker in question says it’s a messy 20 step process right now, and he “could not be a part of” releasing it on Cydia. But as the likes of the iPhone Dev Team and Comex have proved time and time again, what you can never do is assume Apple’s security measures will prevail.
While the iPhone jailbreak scene has been an unspoken source of inspiration for Cupertino for years, this time round, it might just come back to bite its bottom line.
What do you think? Would you hack your iPhone 4 to run Siri and eschew the iPhone 4S? Pipe up with your thoughts in the comments below.

Transform your iPhone into a landline phone

I’ve been wondering just how long it will be before landline phones as we know them become extinct. I can’t say I know a single person under the age of 30 that has one. The only places I see landlines are at my grandparents’ house, and when I’m in a store or office. The only benefit I can really think of that these contraptions have over my smartphone is that they are generally more comfortable to hold.
For around $32 you can relive the glory days of having a receiver to hold in your hand while you talk to someone. That’s right, you can trade in your thin phone for a slightly thicker piece of plastic to hold up to your ear. The one nice feature is that since you’re not holding the phone, you are free to look up important information (or play a game) while you’re talking. You can even put the person on speaker phone, or play music through the built-in speaker. It’s not exactly a revolutionary product, but at least it isn’t expensive.

Siri ported to an iPhone 4, old phone learns a new trick

Apple's iPhone 4 may not have the fancy dual core CPU of its successor, but thanks to the efforts of developer Steven Troughton-Smith and the folks at 9to5 Mac, it may soon have Siri. The port of the sultry voice assistant was accomplished by using the 4S Siri and Springboard files, and some serious elbow grease, no doubt. As you can see in the video below, it's far from perfect, but it can recognize spoken commands without issue. Currently, the hack is missing an iPhone 4 GPU driver that keeps things running buttery smooth on the elder phone, and Cupertino won't authenticate Siri's commands coming from it either. So, it isn't quite ready for primetime, but it should only be a matter of time before all you iPhone 4 owners can tell Siri what to do, too.

iPhone 4S delivered to a number of German customers

A number of lucky customers have received Apple’s iPhone 4S a few days earlier than the phone’s official release date. According to reports, some customers in Germany who pre-ordered the new Apple smartphone have already received the device, and some photos are popping up online.
These lucky users sent in some photos of the iPhone 4S, its packaging and some screenshots of the new Siri feature to Macerkopf.de, a German tech blog.
Apple Inc. has introduced the iPhone 4S last October 4 at the “Let’s talk iPhone” event in its Cupertino headquarters, and began accepting pre-orders on October 7. The official launch date of the new smartphone is on October 14, which is also the date Apple scheduled for pre-order deliveries.
Also, benchmarks have started surfacing online, with the iPhone 4S clocking in at 68 percent faster than the iPhone 4. Separate tests also confirmed that the graphics processor of the iPhone 4S is seven times faster than its predecessor.
The iPhone 4S also scored 677 on the benchmarking test of Geekbench, almost twice the iPhone 4′s 370 and not too far under iPad 2′s 751. The iPad 2 tablet and the iPhone 4S share the same A5 dual-core processor.
The iPhone 4S will be released on Friday in the United Kingdom, U.S., Canada, France, Australia, Germany and Japan. It will launch to 22 more countries, including Mexico, Netherlands, Singapore, Spain and other European countries, by the end of the month.

Apple inventory adds two new iPhones, three new iPod touch devices

Apple’s iPhone 5 unveiling called “Lets talk iPhone” is scheduled for October 4, and leading up to the major event is of course more speculation and clues as to what the company may have in store for everyone. According to a inside tip, Apple has updated its internal inventory system to include two new models of the iPhone and three new models of the iPod touch.

The two new models listed in the system for the iPhone don’t seem to include the iPhone 5. Instead, they are likely the white and black versions of a slightly updated iPhone 4, possibly iPhone 4S, with the codename N90A. The iPhone 4 has the codename N90, whereas the iPhone 5 has been referenced to in the past as the N94, which hasn’t shown up in the system yet.
The new iPod touch models have shown up with the codename N81A, also suggesting a minor step up from the previous generation model, which had a codename of N81. The three models could be for the different storage capacities of 8GB, 32GB, and 64GB. We’ll find out for sure when we attend Apple’s “Let’s talk iPhone” event next Tuesday, October 4, so stay tuned for our live blog.

iPhone 4S world’s first phone with Bluetooth 4.0

iPhone 4SThe iPhone 4S was announced yesterday, and introduced quite a number of impressive features to the device, but one of the phone’s features that were overlooked and overshadowed during the announcement is its support for Bluetooth 4.0. The latest version of the wireless technology standard for exchanging data over short distances might not be a big deal at this point in time, but it will matter in the future. What makes Bluetooth 4.0 so special?
One of the key features of Bluetooth 4.0 is its low-energy technology. With Bluetooth 4.0, accessories or devices that need to constantly on to transmit data to and fro the phone will benefit from it. Users won’t have to keep recharging their devices so often, and leaving them on for prolonged periods of time won’t dramatically affect battery life of the phone, and of the accessories (which can run off tiny batteries). Examples of such devices would be mostly in the health and fitness category: pedometers, heart rate straps, and blood glucose monitors.
Devices such as wireless headsets for listening to music or hands-free communications would also benefit from the low power technology. But as we all know, most devices now don’t even take advantage of Bluetooth 3.0, so it’s going to be awhile before we see Bluetooth 4.0 being widely adopted, but when the time comes, the iPhone 4S will be prepared to work with such devices.

iPhone5 launch expected in London

http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/multimedia/dynamic/00628/UK_News_7-1_jpg_628130t.jpg
Apple is expected to unveil its new iPhone.
The technology firm is staying tight-lipped, but invitations have gone out for "a special event" in central London which say "Let's talk iPhone".
A similar event is also being held at Apple's US headquarters in California.
Industry insiders have predicted the new phone, which is likely to be known as iPhone5, will have a bigger screen and built-in voice recognition software.
It is not clear when the phone will be on sale in the UK or how much it will cost.
There have also been some predictions Apple will launch a cheaper version of the iPhone4 at the same event.
Thousands of gadget fans queued to get their hands on the iPhone4 when it first went on sale last June.
Apple's flagship Regent Street store opened its doors early at 7am to deal with the demand.
The event is at the Apple store in Covent Garden, central London.

Apple iPhone 4S/5 Pre-Event Rumor Roundup

Apple’s iPhone 2011 event kicks off in just over a day’s time, and as always the rumor machine keeps churning right up to the wire. Anticipation for the fifth-gen smartphone is high, though we’re yet to see the sort of convincing leak that pre-empted the iPhone 4 unveil. That hasn’t stopped the rumors from flourishing, however, so head on past the cut for details on what we’re expecting, what we’re hoping to see, and what doesn’t look likely, then join us tomorrow for the full SlashGear liveblog at http://live.slashgear.com/
One big question this year is whether Apple will have one or two devices to show us, something board member Al Gore seemingly suggested. The company has already been pushing a two-model range for the past few years, keeping the older device around – whether the iPhone 3G or the iPhone 3GS – at a lower price point whenever a newer model is launched. This year is tipped to be similar, with the current iPhone 4 sticking around with just 8GB of internal storage as the new entry-level device. According to the leaks, this will be the device codenamed “N90A” and already spotted in at least one inventory system.
What’s still uncertain is what form Apple’s “new” iPhone will take. Although it’s already been dubbed iPhone 5 in several store inventories, that could well just be database shorthand to distinguish between existing models and the next-gen handset. So far, we don’t know if Apple is bringing an iPhone 5 or an iPhone 4S to the show.

iPhone 4S

According to the rumors, the iPhone 4S looks much like the existing iPhone 4, but packs the dual-core Apple A5 processor as found on the iPad 2, 1GB of RAM and a much improved 8-megapixel camera. Believed to be the “N94″ model spotted in some store systems – and with an image from the camera already in the wild - the 4S would be an evolutionary rather than revolutionary upgrade, similar to the 3G to 3GS step a few years back, providing the horsepower to go with some of Apple’s more ambitious functionality believed to be in iOS 5.

iPhone 5

Then there’s the iPhone 5 speculation, tipped to be a significant departure in style from the current glass-metal-sandwich and instead pack a tapered, aluminum chassis more akin to the iPad 2 and MacBook Air than the existing smartphone. That distinctive new design – with a silhouette previewed by several leaked cases and even spawning a mockup - may perhaps be accompanied by a larger display, as Apple follows Android rivals to engage with the “bigger is better” crowd. An increase in screen size could have an impact on apps, however, believed to be one of the reasons Cupertino has stuck with a 3.5-inch panel across all current iPhones.
While a dramatic new model would keep many Apple fans happy, there are also indications that they shouldn’t get their hopes up quite yet. Supply chain sources have tipped delays in components and other production problems which may mean the truly groundbreaking device doesn’t arrive until next year. Part of the confusion is in the nomenclature: Apple won’t reveal the actual name of the new handset until tomorrow, and that’s left some rumors attached to the iPhone 4S, others expecting the iPhone 5, and no real certainty about whether the company is aiming for the high-end alone, the mid-tier or entry-level smartphones.

NFC and LTE

They’re not the only questions, either. NFC and LTE are the buzzwords du jour, respectively “Near Field Communication” for short-range wireless used for things like mobile payments and data tag reading, and “Long Term Evolution” for high-speed 4G data, and both have been connected with iPhone rumors.
NFC would allow Apple to cash in on some of its related wireless payment patents, including a complex Concert Ticket+ system, and leverage some of the millions of active credit cards it has on record out from iTunes and into the real world. Sources are split, though, on whether the fifth-gen iPhone will have the functionality – or, if it’s there in hardware form, if it will be activated yet – and that basically depends on if Cupertino reckons the ecosystem is there yet.
As for LTE, we’ve already speculated that while 4G radio chipsets weren’t up to scratch for Apple’s CDMA iPhone 4, they might be set for tomorrow’s iPhone. Faster mobile broadband would allow for things like iCloud to work at far more user-friendly speeds, synchronizing files and multimedia far quicker while on the move, as well as keeping the new smartphone competitive against the latest and greatest running Android. On the flip-side, 4G is battery-hungry and demands extra space inside the handset, which may fall foul of Apple’s determination to make a thinner device.
iOS 5
There seems little doubt that iOS 5 – the latest iteration of Apple’s mobile OS – will make its official debut at tomorrow’s event. Previewed earlier this year it’ll bring such niceties as a new, streamlined notifications system, deep Twitter integration and of course iCloud, Apple’s wireless sync system. However, there are some features we’re expecting that haven’t been shown before, most notably Assistant.
Billed as the next evolution of voice control, Assistant is believed to be a Nuance powered custom implementation of Siri for new iPhone owners. Taking advantage of the extra RAM in the new model, it would allow for natural speech control of messages, phone dialing, calendar management and more, so that you could ask your handset “Where’s Paul?” and it would automatically use location-based services and other tools to tell you exactly where your friend was. The downside is that, because of the hardware requirement, Assistant might well be limited to the brand new device, rather than offered to the existing iPhone 4 and any cheaper model that could spawn.
With new Apple CEO Tim Cook taking the stage to compere the show for the first time – and Steve Jobs tipped to make a surprise appearance – we’re expecting more than a few surprises all the same. Remember, SlashGear will be liveblogging the whole Apple iPhone announcement tomorrow, so join us at 10am Pacific (that’s 1pm in New York or 6pm in London) at http://live.slashgear.com/.

iPhone 5 Inventory Leaked: Release Date on the 4th October?

As you may of heard, Apple will hold a press event on Tuesday 4th October with the general consensus that they will unveil a new device. Initially everyone (including us) thought this must be for the iPhone 5 release date. However, naysayers (not us) have since suggested that the event could be for a different reason.

Naysayers be gone…

Because a new post from 9 to 5 Mac has leaked an ‘official’ inventory which lists a new iPhone complete with all new specs. Over the past few months reports have suggested that the iPhone 5 (or 4S) will come equipped with an updated 8MP camera from Sony, 1GB of Ram, improved Nuance Voice control and could even come equipped with Apples own NFC technology.
All of the above is all up for debate at this stage, one aspect that seems certain is that the new iPhone will use the same A5 processor as the iPad 2. Some had previously suggested that a lack of chips could force Apple to use the A4 again, but the inventory listing clearly shows the dual core A5 chip will come as standard across the new iPhone range.

iPhone 5 or 4S?

The general feeling is that a new iPhone will be launched on the 4th October, probably with iOS 5 (including information on when the general iOS 5 release date). However, nobody knows whether is will be branded as a iPhone 4s or 5, the photo does show 4S branding which is the strongest indication yet.
Do you think Apple will launch the iPhone 5 on the 4th, what features would you like to see?

64GB iPhone incoming, according to tipster

http://www.cnet.co.uk/i/c/blg/cat/mobiles/iphone64gb.jpg
This one's been running since before the iPhone 4 launched last year, but now we have fresh reason to believe a 64GB iPhone is incoming.
Apple site 9to5mac says it's received a tip from its mysterious Mr. X revealing the next iPhone will come in three different capacities. Could they possibly be 16, 32 and 64GB, just like the iPad 2?
Earlier in the week some new iPhones showed up in Apple's inventory, with two new models rumoured. It wouldn't make sense for Apple to sell an 8GB iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S/5, so the S or 5 could well come in 16, 32 and 64GB flavours.
Apple already sells a 64GB iPod Touch and iPad after all, so what would stop it producing a same size iPhone?
Prototypes have been doing the rounds for almost two years now, if you believe internet rumours. An image purporting to be a 64GB iPhone leaked earlier this year, though whether it's genuine, and whether it'll ever go on sale, is unknown.
Among other rumours for Apple's big unveil on Tuesday include a 4.3-inch screen on the iPhone 5, 8-megapixel camera, and a new, tapered design. The iPhone 4S, a tweaked iPhone 4, is also expected to launch, though some say it'll be the only new handset on show.
Apple is also expected to refresh its iPod line, possibly axing the iPod Classic and Shuffle. It's already removed clickwheel games from iTunes, after all.
Would you buy a 64GB iPhone? Or would the high price put you off? Let us know on our Facebook page.

icam case turns your iPhone into a fake digital camera

How often have you looked at your iPhone 4 and thought “wouldn’t this be better if it looked like an ugly camera?” Oh good, I’m not the only one. Don’t worry, I know this is an issue that’s been plaguing you since you accidentally spent a couple hundred bucks on that shiny glass-covered monstrosity. The good people over at Brando have a solution called the icam, and it’s cheap.
For just $16 you can fool everyone into thinking your iPhone is actually just a colorful digital camera. You’ll get your choice of pink, green, white and black cases, each with their own neck strap. The lens will even extend, so you can complete the ruse by pretending to zoom in on a picture, when you’re really just texting your friends. This is one opportunity that you can’t pass up.

Apple Segera Rilis iPhone 5 Harga Murah Untuk Saingi Ponsel Android
