Technology has just made bus journeys worse over the years. First came the tinny tsh tsh tsh leaking from a pair of headphones, then we had to endure phones with speakers built in, letting everyone in on the owner's choice of terrible r n'b. And now your stint on the number 57 could be about to become a lot worse, thanks to a hybrid of the two.
Though we suppose annoying a busload of passengers wasn't the intention behind the Zumreed X2, a pair of headphones that double as a set of portable speakers. A flick of the switch is all it takes to flit from headphones to speakers, and the drivers on the outside of the ear cups start doing their thing. Hey presto — everyone can hear.
You can rotate the ear cups to stand up the headphones on a desk or other flat surface, providing an effective sound source for your gathering. You'll need to charge up the cans to use them as speakers, which you do via USB. A full one hour charge will provide four hours play time — long enough for most bus journeys. If you just want to use them as headphones, you won't need to charge.
They look a little plasticky from the pictures, but they're nice and colourful, and come with gold-plated 3.5mm and 6.3mm stereo plugs. There's no word on the padding on the ear cups, but it looks like leather to us.
They're available to pre-order now for £120, and will ship on 14 October. We'll bring you a full review as soon as we can. Until then, let us know what you think on our Facebook page.
