TiVo have launched their latest DVR machine and it comes with a meaty spec that includes four tuners, allowing owners to record four different shows while they watch a fifth. Storage has been bumped up to a beefy two terabytes, which is essentially enough space to save 300 hours of high-def television.
The TiVo Premiere Elite box will cost $499 and comes with (as the previous TiVo Premiere did), streaming online from Netflix, Hulu Plus, Youtube, Blockbuster and Amazon Instant Video. The unit also has THX certification and can be used as a media streaming unit, streaming from your pc.
Other than costing a pretty packet, the new TiVo requires a monthly sub of $20, or $500 lifetime license for the TiVo service. A digital cable subscription is a requirement as well.
It seems though that TiVo will continue to struggle as companies bring out their own DVR’s. Cable companies are continually improving their DVR’s.
The cost is also pretty steep when compared to much cheaper alternatives. The unit has other flaws, such as no Wi-Fi built in. That has to come from a add-on or an Ethernet cable costing an extra $60.
Im not sure if anyone would want to record 4 shows while watching another, especially as on-demand content and the cloud are being introduced. Although TiVo invented the DVR, it seems that they are being left behind in the modern age.
Launch date for TiVo Elite has not yet been released, but expect to see it sometime this year.
