Amazon taps Foxconn to manufacture its 10.1-inch tablet

Industry watchers are now looking to see what Amazon is planning for its rumored 10.1-inch tablet, after just releasing the 7-inch Android-powered Kindle Fire tablet PC. The rumored 10.1-inch version of the Kindle Fire is expected to be released in 2012.
According to a report by DigiTimes, Amazon is likely to tap Foxconn, the maker of the world’s top tablet the iPad, to produce a larger model of its tablet. The report also noted that shipments of the new Amazon tablet will begin before the end of the year, just in time for the holiday season.
Foxconn was previously involved in talks to produce the 7-inch Kindle Fire, but sources said that it “reportedly decided to not take the 7-inch tablet PC orders as the company has been busily working on iPads for Apple.” The move ensured that Quanta Computer, a company also involved in Apple’s supply chain, secured the deal.

The Kindle Fire was launched last Wednesday and sells for $199, way cheaper than the cheapest Apple iPad, which sells for $499. The Kindle Fire is powered by a dial-core processor, and has a library of over 18 million TV shows, movies, songs, books, and magazines, and its Amazon Appstore that houses thousands of games and apps. The tablet also features fast web browsing through Amazon Silk and free cloud storage for all content from Amazon.
Amazon Prime members will enjoy unlimited streaming of over 10,000 TV shows and moovies, ensuring that the new Kindle tablet can be primarily used as a media consumption device, which makes it different from the iPad and other Android devices.
