Samsung Galaxy Player Mini-Tablet Headed for the U.S. in Two Sizes

Samsung has just announced that it's going to release two versions of the Galaxy Player in the U.S. next month. This device won't be a smartphone, instead it is going to be an Android-based handheld computer focused on games, video, and music.
The two versions will differ in only a couple of ways, most notably display size: one will have a 5-inch WVGA (800 x 480) Touchscreen and the other with a 4-inch one of the same resolution. This will give them bigger screens than their top rival, the Apple iPod touch. And like Apple's handheld, the Galaxy Player is intended to appeal to consumers who want most of the features of a smartphone but without the monthly wireless service fee.
No matter its size, this model is powered by Android OS 2.3.5 (Gingerbread), with a new user interface. It will come with the standard suite of Google apps and the Android Market. There will be 8GB of built-in memory and a microSD memory card slot for additional storage.
As there will be no no cellular connectivity, Wi-Fi b/g/n will enable this mini-tablet to access the Web, email, and other online content. Bluetooth will also be included.
In addition, the Galaxy Player is going to include front and rear cameras for video chat and photography. 
The version with a 5-inch display will be 3.1 x 5.6 x 0.5 inches, weigh 6.4 ounces, and include a 2500 mAh battery. The more diminutive version is going to be 2.5 x 4.9 x 0.4 inches, 4.3 ounces, and include a 1200 mAh battery.
Price and AvailabilityThe Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 and 4.0 will be available for sale nationwide starting on October 16. The 5-inch version is going to sell for $270, while the 4-inch one will cost $230.
